Portola Valley
On Thursday afternoon we drove to Portola Valley where we usually hike on Gold Mine Trail. This time we dropped John off for a run up Windy Hill, while we took a gentle three-mile round trip hike to Sausal Pond.

Gateway to Windy Hill and Sausal Pond trails. The poison oak is already showing Fall colors.

We were surprised to find a babbling brook in this very dry season.

A covey of quail crossed the path, staying well ahead of us, as they fed on insects along the way. We also encountered a very large snake and dozens of lizards.

Sausal pond attracts lots of wildlife. Minnows were plentiful in the shallows and footprints of raccoons were evident at the pond’s edge.
